A widely circulated report over the past two weeks has Google shelving the 'Nexus' brand for its company marketed phones and instead it will adopt the 'Pixel' brand that it used for its last tablet and Chrome notebook.   If reports are correct, we should expect two new devices, code-named Sailfish and Marlin that will be known publicly as the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL.  The new 'Pixel' phones will replace the company's current Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P and come in two sizes, 5 inch and 5.5 inch.  They will be built by HTC.

These new phones could be introduced as soon as September 20th, when HTC is holding a product event or it might not happen until October 4th, still only a few weeks away when Google has its own event up in San Francisco.  Expected specifications include a superfast Snapdragon 821...the only phones to be using this new chip at this point, a 12 megapixel camera, and fingerprint scanner on the back.  We should also expect 'Google' branding on the back of the phone instead of the usual 'Nexus'.  The renderings up top incorporate the latest leaked specs and smuggled out pics of what the final phones will look like.  Of course both the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL will be the first phones running the latest version of Google's operating system, Android 'Nougat'. Stay tuned for more info as we get it.
